The owner from Nicky’s cafe came and was a guest speaker for my entrepreneurship class. Nicky started of his presentation by giving us breakfast sandmich’s and catching our attention right away. Nicky shared his life story with us which was quiet interesting. It showed us a lot of his determination and hardship he went through in his life. Nicky had lived in Greece with his parents and five sibling. Nicky had to leave his home because of the poor living conditions and the little food his family had. Nicky had embarked on a journey to Canada to better his life and send money back to support his family. He was only 17 but was as mature and hard working as any grown man. Nicky had left Greece by a boat which went from Italy to Portugal and finally ended up in Halifax, Canada. Nicky was very proud making it to Canada and becoming a Canadian citizen. Nicky was ready to start his life in the western world and only had only 10 candian dollars to his name. To make things even more difficlult, Nicky did not even speak English. He was more then ready to learn and start working hard. Once arriving in Halifax he took a train to Montreal where he ate a donut and watched tv for the first time. On December 27, 1962 Nicky had moved to Regina. Nicky had started working in a hotel as washing dishes but moved his way up to a Chief. Nicky was a very hard worker and was making 300 dollars a month. Nicky saved as much money as possible could and still sent a good amount back to his family in Greece. After living in Regina for two years Nicky had moved to Chicago and was a Chief. He really did not enjoy living their and had moved back Canada where he lived in Davidson Sk. He had worked at a truck stop while living their and shortly after moved to Regina. In 1986 Nicky had opened up the Diplomat and Nicky’s Cafe. Both restarunt’s have been very successful and Nicky’s life story is very fascinating and shows how much hardship he had to go through.
What I found really interesting about Nicky was how he came to Canada with only ten dollars and look at the success he had. It really shows how hard work pays of and you should never give up on your dreams.
Some tips Nicky had given my class was:
- Hard times don’t last but tough people do
- When approached with a task get it done right away and don’t leave it to the last-minute
- Be a good person, work hard, enjoy life and don’t over do things
Colter has a passion for the clothing industry and had seen that Regina didn’t have a streetwear store. Colter had noticed this hole in Regina and had set his dreams on opening up a clothing store that carried many brands. Colter had his bachelors degree in Business Administration with a Finance major and was on his way to own and open his clothing store. He had worked at Off Axis and obtained a lot of connections and was ready to open up his clothing store named Coda. This was not an easy task for him, he had invested $45,000 dollars of his own money and obtained $30,000 dollars from loans. He had finally opened up his store in Regina during the Fall of 2008 and Coda was on its way to being involved in the community. Coda has over 80 brands in their store and they carry a lot of the smaller brands or major brands people want. Now Colter hates poor customer service and wanted Coda to be the store that actually cared about the customers and would listen to them. Thats why Coda sells smaller brands that are popular in Regina and also bigger brands. Coda is still running strong in Regina because they listen to what the customers want and sell brands that most clothing stores wouldn’t. Coda sponsors their business online, plus is very involved in the community and doing local chairty events. They are such a huge success in Regina and have obtained a large amount of loyal customers.
Now what was really interesting to me was how Colter was so inspired to be invloved in the community and getting his business known by doing community charity events. Also how he didn’t want to open up multiple stores, he wanted to stay small and be involved in Regina. I really admire that about Colter because he seems like a real done to earth, good person that just wants to be invloved in his community and give the best customer service. I learned a lot by Colter coming and talking to my entre 30 class. I will make sure my class breakfast company gives the best costumer service and be actively invloved in Campbell Collegiate.
Eating Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
This year my Entrepreneur 30 class will be focusing on serving breakfast in the mornings to the students of Campbell Collegiate. Our menu will mostly consist of healthy foods and nutritous drinks that taste great.
Studies have shown that students who eat breakfast are more alert at school and are able to learn alot easier as they are not hungry. Eating breakfast is also a great way to stay in shape and keeping healthy. By eating breakfast regularly it helps you to not over eat at lunch time and gain weight. Eating breakfast in the morning helps get your metabolism started for the day. It not only helps you physically but also mentally. It only makes sense to eat breakfast.
”Campbell’s Breakfast tastes mhm mhm GOOD!”
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born May 14, 1984. Mark at a young age started developing programs and really enjoyed creating communication tools and games for the computer. While Mark attended Harvard he launched Facebook from his dormitory room on February 04, 2004 overnight. Mark and from the help of his roommate spread the word of this online communication site that Mark had created. This site allows you to upload photos of yourself, keep in touch with your friends and many other applications have been added throughout the years. Facebook was spreading from person to person like wild fire since its creation because it was the most advanced online interacting site. With many investments and new applications facebook soon became the top interacting site in the world. There are now over 500 million users to date, nearly every business is sponsoring itself on the website and you can now access the website even from your cell phone. Facebook is a huge want factor because it allows people to keep in touch with their friends no matter where they live in the world. There was many online interacting sites but Mark used this opportuniy to create a better, more interesting way to communicate online. Mark is now 26 years old and his net worth is 6.9 billion dollars. Most of his income has come from Facebook and he has a 24% share in his business to date. I personally enjoy using facebook and think it’s a great way to keep in contact with friends.
This video shows an inexpensive way to solve the huge problem millions of people have to deal with everyday. Michael Pritchard has invented a tool called ”life savior” which cleans contaminated water and makes it completely safe and clean to drink. Using the tool is very easy, all you have to do is fill up the filter like bottle with filthy water. Using the handle push and pull the water through the filter. The filter cleans the water and makes it safe to drink. This “life savior” tool is so interesting and is the cheapest and most helpful tool a person in need of drinkable water can have. It allows families to not have to travel far to find clean water and this “life savior” tool gives families up to three years of clean drinking water! I completely agree with Michael Pritchard and I think his invention is a great help to the need need factor. The only question i have is how much success this invention has had and how much unfortunate family’s it has helped the to this day.
